Today is the New Years' Day in many parts of India; Yugadi for the Telugus
and Kannadigas, Gudi Padva for the Maharashtrians and Cheti Chand for the
Sindhis. This morning, Bhagawan also inaugurated His new residence
opposite the Poornachandra auditorium, which has been named 'Yajur
Mandiram'. After arriving in Sai Kulwant Hall at 8 o'clock and taking His
full darshan round in the car, Bhagawan, resplendent in a yellow robe,
came walking onstage and sat there for a short while. Then, He took Arati
and proceeded to Yajur Mandiram seated in His special Lamborghini vehicle,
preceded by the Bands of the Primary School, the Anantapur Campus and the
Prasanthi Nilayam campus of the Institute. At Yajur Mandiram, Bhagawan
first Blessed the Puja being conducted in the entrance hall.
Doctors and other guests were seated, ready for the Banquet being hosted
by Swami, in the twin building adjacent to Bhagawan's residence. Swami
went there, Blessed all of them and then proceeded to the Poornachandra,
where all the students and teachers were being served Lunch. Taking a
round there in His chair, Swami went back to Yajur Mandiram and proceeded
upstairs.
In the evening, Swami came to Sai Kulwant Hall a few minutes past 4
o'clock. After He sat onstage for a few minutes, the Vice-Chancellor
announced that the students would present some songs and a skit relating
the significance of Yugadi. The skit incorporated the "Panchanga sravanam"
or the reading of the almanac, and conveyed Bhagawan's message that as
long as we have God's Blessings (Anugraha), the nine planets (grahas)
cannot affect us. After this programme which also incorporated several
songs, Bhagawan indicated that He would be giving us His Divine Message.
The text of Bhagawan's Yugadi message will be available here soon.
By the time Bhagawan completed His Discourse, it was past 6.15 pm. Then
prasadam was distributed to all, and Bhagawan retired to His abode.

The last few days saw several programmes put up by the students at very
short notice. This evening witnessed a drama by the school boys, Bhaktha
Chaitanya, on the life of the poet saint Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. After the
Chaitanya drama, Swami asked for an impromptu dance by the dance group,
with the song 'Ramanna Ramudu' being sung live.... And then a speech in
classical Telugu by one of the Institute students, followed by songs and
bhajans. On the 27th the school boys of the X and XII classes who had
finished their exams presented some skits interspersed with songs, based
on Swami's Chinna Kathas.

A brief note on Ugadi Festival:Festivals are celebrated every
year in the remembrance of past events. All the major Hindu festivals have
their own purpose and significance, i.e., to show their relevance and
importance in the context of the eternal world cycle of history. India's
rich heritage with its numerous festivals celebrated throughout the year,
provides succour and faith, as each occasion has its own distinct value,
beauty and ritual practice. Amongst the numerous festivals of India, Ugadi
is celebrated with festive fervour in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra
Pradesh. While it is called Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, in
Maharashtra it is known as Gudipadava".
Hindus have always given pride of place to festivals, as it is a time for
getting together as families. The occasion can be based on a seasonal
change, a social or religious theme. The New year festival or Ugadi comes
close on the heels of Holi. Ugadi name has been changed from Yuga Aadi
(Yuga + Aadi means "Beginning of New age"). It is believed that the
creator of the Hindu pantheon Lord Brahma started creation on this day -
Chaitra suddha padhyami or the Ugadi day. Also the great Indian
Mathematician Bhaskaracharya's calculations proclaimed the Ugadi day from
the sunrise on as the beginning of the new year, new month and new day.
The onset of spring also marks a beginning of new life with plants (barren
until now) acquiring new life, shoots and leaves. Spring is considered the
first season of the year hence also heralding a new year and a new
beginning. The vibrancy of life and verdant fields and meadows full of
colorful blossoms signifies growth, prosperity and well-being.
Ugadi marks the beginning of a new Hindu lunar calendar with a change in
the moon's
orbit. It is a day when mantras are chanted and predictions made for the
New Year. Traditionally, the Panchanga Sravanam or listening to the yearly
calendar was done at the temples. On Ugadi day, people wake up before the
break of dawn and take a head bath after which they decorate the entrance
of their houses with fresh mango leaves.
On this day, it is the practice to eat what is called "Ugadi Pacchadi
(Ugadi Chutney). This Chutney is made from neem flowers, mango juice,
honey, sugar and other ingredients with different tastes. The inner
significance of this preparation is to indicate that life is a mixture of
good and bad, joy and sorrow and all of them have to be treated alike. All
experiences have to be treated with equanimity. Everyone should make a
resolve that he will face calmly whatever happens in this year, accepting
it with good grace. Welcome everything. Consider everything as for one’s
own good. Men should rise above sorrow and happiness, success and failure.
This is the primary message of the Ugadi festival.
